Executive aided Bromwell conviction
The construction company executive who engineered a years-long scheme to bribe former state Sen. Thomas L. Bromwell Sr. received a prison term of 6 1/2 years yesterday in federal court, slightly less than the seven-year sentence imposed on the Baltimore County Democrat earlier this month. Calling the crimes "extremely serious," U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz also ordered W. David Stoffregen to forfeit more than $5.6 million in cash, vehicles and property to represent the amount of money lost due to rigged contracts and outright theft from his pipe and steamfitting company. As his tearful family and friends watched in the Baltimore courtroom, the 54-year-old Towson man apologized for his conduct in halting speech, saying "I would like for the chance to rebuild my life again.
Message doesn't change, but method does for 'kinder, gentler' Coughlin
The goal, always the goal, was that the next time I went back to a Super Bowl, it would be with my team," Coughlin, now the coach of the New York Giants, said in an interview with The Associated Press. The 61-year-old coach has been painted this week as a changed leader as he approaches a game against undefeated New England in his first Super Bowl as a head coach. .
Giuliani backs McCain, but Edwards delays
If I'd endorsed anyone else, you would say I was flip-flopping," he said, mentioning an oft-repeated criticism of McCain's chief rival, Mitt Romney. For Edwards, the quest for the White House has been one of seeming contradictions and compelling personal drama. John Kerry's running mate in 2004, Edwards earned millions as a trial lawyer, lives in a 28,000-square-foot house and is known for famously expensive haircuts. He did consulting work for a hedge fund that caters to the super-rich to learn about financial markets and their relationship to poverty - and to make money, too. Yet Edwards focused his candidacy on ending poverty and economic inequality. "It is the cause of my life," he said yesterday, saying he had won assurances from the remaining Democratic candidates - Sens.
Edwards quits race
Check out this PDF full page advertisement that an individual paid $85,000.00 of his own money to run in the USA Today newspaper on November 21, 2007. His own money. Not campaign money. Not a special interest group. He is that passionate about his candidate. And frankly, so am I. http://tinyurl.com/2e8hdn He is the only candidate with an economic plan (that will actually work): http://tinyurl.com/2efg4w Read it carefully. It makes sense. Scotching the myth
Some have claimed Scotland gets free medical prescriptions, free school meals and has a world-leading health service, but only Wales has free prescriptions and the Scottish Government does not currently fund free school meals. It is true the Scottish Parliament has delivered a free care for the elderly package, but the flagship policy of devolution has been dogged by waiting lists and squabbles over funding. NHS waiting lists are no shorter in Scotland. Gordon Brown's elevation to Prime Minister and Alistair Darling's promotion to Chancellor raised the temperature. With two Scots in Downing Street, some politicians and the London-based media have launched political attacks. Journalist Kelvin MacKenzie provocatively told a TV debate: "The Scots exist solely on the handouts of the clever English generating wealth in London and the south-east." It is notoriously difficult to disentangle the UK's tax and spending totals to discover where the winners and losers lie.
